Getting Home for the Holidays

Ms. Rene on her holiday decorated bus.

Ms. Rene, a special education driver, has decorated her bus for every holiday since she started at Dallas County Schools nine years ago. Decorating for the holidays adds a little something extra for her kids’ commute to and from school and she says she loves how their eyes light up when they receive their holiday goodies. “I decorate for every holiday, Christmas, Thanksgiving, St. Patrick’s Day, and Easter.”

A former worker at Children’s Medical Center, she says being a special needs bus driver called to her because she loves working with children. A mother of three and grandmother of four, Ms. Rene takes extra care with the children on her bus, getting to know their families, engaging them in conversation and ensuring their needs are met, as well as making the start and end to their days as easy and fun as possible. “I’m just a motherly person,” she said. “Children with special needs don’t like changes. Once they get to know me, they know when I’m playing with them, they know when I’m not playing. When Ms. Rene means something, she means it.”

Ms. Rene prides herself on her perfect attendance record and says the best part of her job is getting to be around her group of kids. “I think decorating the bus is a way to do something a little fun and I love seeing the joy on their faces every time they see something new on the bus.”
